Discussion List Guidelines

All list members should adhere to the following rules.

  • The discussions on the list are meant to stimulate conversation, not to create contention. Please avoid derogatory comments, ridicule and abusive, defamatory or profane language.

  • Respect the confidentiality of the list. To encourage and support candid discussion of difficult issues, list members must not forward or share State Nutritionists Listserv messages with outside parties unless they first obtain explicit permission from the author of that message.

  • Exercise good judgment in sharing information. While this is a private list and discussions are confidential, please bear in mind that information posted to the list will be archived and available for all current and future members to see.

The National Resource Center on Nutrition and Aging reserves the right to suspend or terminate membership on this list for members who violate the rules listed above. If you have questions or concerns, or wish to report a possible violation, please contact

Discussion List Etiquette

To ensure the best possible experience for all members, we ask that you try to adhere to the following etiquette best practices when posting to the discussion list.

  • Include a signature tag on all messages. Make sure your message includes your name, affiliation, location and email address.

  • Concisely and clearly state the topic of your email in the subject line. Descriptive subject lines make it easier for others to keep track of and participate in ongoing discussions, and to search for information in the list archives at a later date.

  • When replying to a post, trim all unnecessary pieces of the original message. When you “reply” to an email from the discussion group, only include enough of the original message for readers to understand your response. Delete the rest (e.g., a chain of prior messages, excessive headers and signatures, etc.). This practice helps list members who receive a daily digest to read and follow conversations.

  • Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that benefits everyone. Please remember that when you click the “Reply” button, your response will be sent to all members on the list. Messages such as "thanks for the information" should be sent to individuals—not to the entire list. You can do this by using your email application's forwarding option and typing in or cutting and pasting in the email address of the individual to whom you want to respond.

  • Do not send administrative messages, such as “remove me from the list” through the listserv. If you have administrative or subscription questions, please contact directly.

  • Be mindful of the longevity of the content you are posting. Be advised that messages sent via this list serve will may be retained indefinitely, and may be subject to federal Freedom of Information Act requests.
  • Generalities can be OK. It is advisable to refrain from using a specific business or person’s name (or any other unique identifying information) within your communications.

  • Learn, share and have fun. Frequent, insightful and practice-informed questions and responses are the fabric of the positive and constructive forum for networking and information exchange that is the State Unit on Aging listserv.
